Puraclenz uses an evolved form of photocatalytic oxidation (PCO) air purification used for more than 40 years aboard the International Space Station. Its patented cell design generates unprecedented ion density using only safe, non-ozone UV lamps to proactively deactivate viruses and indoor pollutants.

The Puraclenz air purification systems use photocatalytic technology to disinfect and remove bacteria and viruses from the air. This technology has been shown effective at reducing viruses, including SARS-CoV-2 that live in the air or on surrounding exposed surfaces. But how does that technology work?

The photocatalytic technology used in our Puraclenz products is a form of photocatalytic oxidation that has evolved to effectively purify your space. The technology uses a multi-blade design that reflects UV light to generate a high density of positive and negative ions. As these ions fill the space, they work to kill the pathogens in the air and on exposed surfaces by breaking down those pollutants on a molecular level.

What are Ions?

An ion is an atom or molecule that has gained or lost an electron, giving it a positive or negative electrical charge. When ions disperse throughout a space, they react with single-celled organisms to break down their cellular membranes and destroy the cell. After interaction, the molecules lose their electrical charge and are released back into the air as water vapor.

Puraclenz’ ultra-efficient catalyst design allows our products to use UV lamps that produce no ozone by-products. PCO has over 40 years of peer review and studies performed by third party independent labs and universities to kill pathogens.

Using air as a medium to deliver ions allows Puraclenz to clean pollutants exposed to the air, including respiratory droplets and hard-to-reach exposed surfaces missed by hand-cleaning or HEPA filters.


When someone coughs or sneezes in a room being treated with passive air purifiers, such as HEPA filters, pathogens (such as coronavirus) must move through the space back to the fan unit where it is collected by a filter.

Aerosol Research and Engineering Laboratories have confirmed that Puraclenz’s ozone-free technology is over 99% effective at reducing the MS2 virus in the air. MS2 bacteriophage is an FDA-recognized proxy virus of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.
